Key takeaways
- Julius AI is a chat-first AI data analyst: you upload files and work through a conversation.
- DashboardGPT is a canvas-first workspace: every answer becomes an object you can keep, arrange and build on.
- Choose Julius for fast one-person analysis in a thread. Choose DashboardGPT when answers need to persist, connect and be shared.
- DashboardGPT uses your own AI key and runs queries on Apache Superset, with a free plan and a no-signup playground.
The short answer
Julius AI and DashboardGPT both turn plain-English questions into charts and analysis. They differ in the shape of the work:
- Julius AI is chat-first. You upload a file and have a conversation with an AI analyst. Answers appear in the thread, one after another.
- DashboardGPT is canvas-first. You ask questions and each answer lands as an object on an infinite canvas: a chart, a metric, a table or a written insight. You arrange them, link follow-ups to the answer they came from, and come back to the same canvas later.
If you mostly do quick, one-off analysis on your own, a chat thread works well. If you build up an analysis over several sessions, or share it with a team, a canvas usually works better.
Features and pricing in this category change often. This comparison focuses on how each product is designed to be used; check each vendor's site for current plans.

Where the answers live
This is the difference you notice after the first ten minutes.
In a chat thread, each new answer pushes the earlier ones up the screen. To compare the chart from your second question with the one from your seventh, you scroll. When you come back tomorrow, you reread the thread to find where you were.
On a canvas, answers stay where you put them. You can place the monthly revenue chart next to the regional breakdown, group the three charts that explain a drop, and delete the dead ends. When you reopen the canvas, the analysis is laid out the way you left it.
Neither is better in every case. A thread is linear and simple. A canvas is spatial and better for analyses with several branches.
Follow-up questions
Both tools handle follow-ups, in different ways:
- In a thread, a follow-up applies to the conversation so far. That works when you are exploring one line of thought.
- On the DashboardGPT canvas, you select a specific chart and ask about it: "Break this down by plan", "Only enterprise customers", "Why did this dip?". The new answer is linked to the one it came from, so you can branch from any point in the analysis without losing the rest.
For example, from a single MRR chart you can branch into churn by plan in one direction and expansion by account in another, and both branches stay visible side by side.
Data sources
Both tools work well with uploaded spreadsheets. With DashboardGPT:
- Explore (free): CSV and Excel uploads up to 50 MB, one workspace and canvas, and unlimited questions on the demo dataset.
- Team: warehouse connections, unlimited canvases and sharing, scheduled refresh and workspace roles.
- Enterprise: SSO, private or self-hosted deployment, audit logging and dedicated model routing.

AI models and cost
DashboardGPT uses bring-your-own-key on every plan. You connect your own AI provider account, and model usage is billed by that provider at its published rates. DashboardGPT charges only for the plan, so there is no markup on tokens.
Most chat-first tools, including Julius AI, include AI usage in their own plans. That is simpler to start with, since there is no key to set up. BYOK gives you more control over the model, the spend and the data agreement, which matters most to teams with an existing AI provider contract.
Pricing
DashboardGPT pricing, in USD:
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Explore | Free | CSV and Excel uploads (50 MB), one canvas, BYOK |
| Team | $40 per user per month | Warehouse connections, unlimited canvases and sharing, scheduled refresh, roles |
| Enterprise | Custom | SSO, self-hosting, audit logging, named support |

Which one should you choose?
Choose Julius AI if:
- You work alone and want quick answers from a file in a conversation.
- You prefer AI usage bundled into one subscription.
- Your analyses are mostly one-off.
Choose DashboardGPT if:
- You build an analysis over several sessions and want to come back to it laid out as you left it.

- You want answers computed by real queries on Apache Superset.
Try them side by side
The fairest test takes 30 minutes:
- Take one real CSV your team uses.
- Ask the same five questions in both tools.
- Check one answer against a number you already know.
- Close both, come back an hour later and see which one lets you pick up where you left off.
