Chat with your data · How-to

From sign-up to your first dashboard in about three minutes

A new analytics tool earns its place by showing you something useful on the first day. DashboardGPT's guided setup gets you there with your own data: upload a file, get a canvas of charts, ask a question and share what you find.

Key takeaways

  • Every new account opens with a guided setup: add your data, build a canvas, ask a question and, if you like, invite your team.
  • Each step is real work in your own workspace, and Continue only lights up once that step is done, so you finish with a canvas and an answer.
  • Skip setup at any time, and pick up where you left off from Finish setting up on the Overview.
  • The tour of the menus waits until you want it: at the end of setup, or from the compass icon in the header.

Why the first session matters

Most analytics tools greet you with an empty dashboard and a tour of the menus. You learn where the buttons are, but you still don't have an answer, and the tab gets closed. The quickest way to know whether a tool fits is to see your own numbers in it.

That is why a new DashboardGPT account starts with a short guided setup instead. Every step is done in the product with your data, so by the end you have a canvas of charts and an answer you can check against figures you already know.

New to asking questions of your data? Chat with your data: the complete guide explains the idea first.

What you need

  • A DashboardGPT account. Every new account starts on a free Team trial, with no card needed, and setup opens as soon as you sign up.
  • A CSV or Excel file. Sales, orders, sign-ups: any table you work with will do. A recent export you know well is best, because you can check the answers.
  • About three minutes. Each step shows roughly how long it takes.

The four setup steps

  1. Add your data. Upload a CSV or Excel file and give it a name. DashboardGPT looks at every column and gets the file ready for questions while you watch.
  2. Build a canvas. One click turns your file into a canvas of charts picked for your columns, from headline figures to trends and breakdowns. You can carry on while the charts arrive.
  3. Ask a question. The assistant opens beside your new canvas, already pointed at your file. Ask in plain language or pick a suggestion, and the answer lands on the canvas.
  4. Invite your team, if you like. Send a teammate an invitation so they can see your canvas and ask their own questions. This step is optional, and you can invite people later from Settings.

Continue lights up as soon as a step is done in your workspace, so you always know where you stand. A panel beside the steps shows your progress, and on a phone it becomes a progress bar.

Curious what goes on the canvas? Turn a spreadsheet into a canvas of charts in one step shows the charts you get and how to make them your own.

Skip now, finish later

Setup never stands in your way. Skip setup is in the corner of every step and takes you straight to your workspace.

  • Pick up where you stopped. A Finish setting up card on the Overview takes you back to the step you left.
  • Your work is kept. A file you uploaded or a canvas you built during setup stays in your workspace, whether you finish setup or not.
  • The next step is always in reach. Until a workspace has data, the assistant offers Upload a file and Connect a Google account instead of suggested questions.

After setup

The last screen opens your new canvas, or takes you to your workspace. From there:

  • Take the tour for a one-minute look at where everything is. It doesn't open on its own, and you can start it at any time from the compass icon in the header.
  • Bring in more data. Connect a Google account to import Google Sheets, Google Analytics or Search Console reports, which are part of the free trial too. How to chat with a Google Sheet shows how.
  • Book a demo. Want someone to walk you through it? Choose Schedule a demo in the header and pick a 30-minute slot with a solutions engineer.
  • Make the most of your trial. Your free Team trial covers what it includes and how to choose a plan when it ends.

Ready to see your own numbers? Sign up and setup starts straight away, compare what each plan includes on the pricing page, or contact us if you would like a hand getting your team started.

Frequently asked questions

About three minutes for most people: around a minute to upload a file, half a minute to build the canvas and a minute to ask your first question. Inviting your team is optional.

Yes. Skip setup is on every step and takes you straight to your workspace. Finish setting up on the Overview brings you back to the step where you stopped.

Setup starts from a CSV or Excel upload. Once you are in your workspace, you can connect a Google account. Then import Google Sheets, Google Analytics or Search Console reports. These are part of the free Team trial too.

It now waits until you want it. Setup offers it on the last screen, and you can start it at any time from the compass icon in the header.

No. Setup is for the person who creates the account. People you invite go straight to the workspace, and the tour is there for them on the compass icon in the header.

Yes. The file and the canvas are real, so they count toward the trial's 5 files and 2 canvases, and they stay in your workspace afterwards.
